PGA Tour Yardage Book - Innisbrook Copperhead's "Snake Pit"

March 10, 2017

The PGA Tour is making its way to Palm Harbor, FL this week to play in the 2017 Valspar Championship. Designed by Larry Packard in 1970 (opened in 1972), and renovated in 2015 as part of a $4.5 million dollar restoration project that saw all 18 greens and fairways replaced with a new drainage system, grass, and repairs to bunkers.

A couple of quick highlights:

Par: 71

Yardage: 7,340 yards

Fairways: Celebration Bermuda Grass over seeded with Ryegrass

Greens: Tifeagle Bermuda Grass over seeded with Poa Trivialis

Bunkers: 72

If you have been watching the golf channel or subscribe to any golf podcasts, there will be no doubt that you've heard of the dreaded "snake pit". The 16th, 17th, and 18th holes are every bit as scary as PGA National's "Bear Trap".

Hole 16: "Moccasin" - 460 yards, Par 4

Known as one of the hardest holes in the PGA Tour, a narrow fairway with water on the right and oaks/pines to the left leaves the player with an intimidating shot off the tee.

The PGA Tour pros will be hitting a variety of clubs off the tee and just for reference, a 300 yard drive would hit the 150 marker in the middle of the fairway.

If you elect to play it "safe", a 3-wood into the dogleg right will set your long approach shot into an elevated pin. Bunkers to the left and right frame the green. American Flag grandstands will be seen from the blimp and TV cameras and will most likely play a big role in shaking out the pretenders from the contenders this week.

A yardage book and calm caddy will tell his player to relax off the tee, and let him know that a Par is a great start to the dreaded Snake Pit.
